Northside football leaning on family in 2014

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Northside Patriots are channeling the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates as they prepare for the season.

It’s all about family.

“We have a lot of improvements to make, and we know that, so we’re hitting those things head on and trying to make those improvements,” said head coach Morgan Ingram. “Our thought is if we do it together as a family, we'll be a lot more successful."

The Patriots are taking this “family” thing seriously.

“Family is a word people toss around a lot, but at Northside, we really mean it,” said senior defensive end Te’Qwan Walrond. “Our older guys, we teach our younger guys how to develop, and our younger guys look up to our older guys."

Northside finished 2-8 last year, a disappointing season they’re using as motivation.

“That’s 2-8 record, that’s on the whiteboard in the classrooms and we look at that almost every day,” said senior defensive back Steven Crayton. “We’re going to change that. We’re going to change it from a high number to a low number.”

The Patriots do return a number of players with experience, including the entire starting defensive secondary. That experience helps the players know what to expect.

“[We stay motivated] just by working hard,” Ingram said. “If they feel like the coaches are working for them and the coaches feel like they're working hard, then everybody stays motivated."

Northside opens the season Thursday, Aug. 28 against Kendrick at Kinnett Stadium.
