Remembering UGA legend Dan Magill

Posted: Updated:
ATHENS, Ga. -  Some people call him the greatest Georgia Bulldog of all time. Dan Magill worked with University of Georgia athletics for more than 60 years. He died Sunday in his Athens home.

His name and legacy are important pieces of Georgia Bulldog history. The tennis complex in Athens is named for him, as is the press box at Sanford Stadium.

As they say, Dan Magill was born and bred to be a Bulldog. He is famously known as the first baby to be born at Athens Regional Hospital. Here are some of the many accolades he achieved for UGA.

It started early. He was a bat for the baseball team in the 191930'sAfter a stint in the marines and job with the Atlanta Journal as a sports writer, Magill became the tennis coach for the Dawgs. He coached for 34 years and won two national championships. During much of that, he was also the sports information director, getting journalists and broadcasters all the information they could ever want about the Dawgs.

He also got numerous coaching awards including the NCAA national coach of the year. Magill once told UGA what he thinks it takes to be successful in athletics.

“You have got to get the horses to win the race. You have got to have the material. You have got to have coaches that do more good than harm,” Magill told UGA. “It is the horses that win the race, not the coaches. Coaches, if they can do more good than harm are alright. Thirdly, you have got to get the breaks and not have your good players hurt, or put in jail, or flunking out. Then, it also helps a lot if you who are playing, if their best player is hurt. Those are the things it takes to win.”

"The University has lost the greatest Bulldog of all time,” said UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity. “The entire UGA family mourns his loss.  He was a mentor to numerous people, including myself, and touched the lives of so many. He was the best at everything he did in his roles as a legendary tennis coach, sports information director, and Bulldog Club founder. Mr. Magill was the consummate professional who was loved by everyone.  On a personal note, he was one of my best friends over our 49-year relationship during which I found him to be both memorable and remarkable. I'll miss my good friend."

“I've been in college athletics for over 57 years as a player and coach, and I have met some fine people who have been great for college athletics, but none greater than Dan Magill.  I¹ll tell you how strong he was he took an average student like me and promoted me where I was named Academic All-America!  That's something,” said former Auburn coach Pat Dye.”

It's kind of an odd road trip in the middle of the season for the Auburn Tigers. They play Thursday night at Kansas State. It will be their first game this year against a ranked opponent.
