"The Dome is gone," Marion County working to defend state championship

BUENA VISTA, Ga. -  Sometimes, dealing with success is as difficult as dealing with failure. The Marion County Eagles are trying to defend their crown as state champions.

Marion County started the 2014 season like the 2013 one ended: with a win. But, Head Coach Mike Swaney has been telling his guys that they cannot get content. He says there is plenty to improve.

“We are not tackling like I like us to tackle. You know, it's early in the year. Just trying to improve on fundamentals and techniques,” said Coach Swaney.

And his players are hearing all about the tackling problems. Assistant coaches are constantly telling them they didn't tackle as well as they should have.

The leaders on the team are having to show guys what it takes to get back to Atlanta.

“I tell them, you have got to compete. It is hard to get there,” said senior tackle Tray Smith. “You've got other teams in the state trying to get there. You have got to work hard every day.”

"Just keep working hard and having the same mindset as last year. Like I said, don't stay in the past. You just have to keep on working as hard as you did last year,” said senior quarterback Dustin Eckert.

Coach Swaney says the Eagles are doing a good job of being humble. He reminds them often about how long ago the state championship was.

“The Dome is gone,” Swaney said. “It's a new year, a new team. We are trying to find the chemistry. We have got a region that has got six playoff teams from last year if you count Taylor from double-A. It's a long ways to the end and there are going to be a lot of tough ones to play.”

The first tough one will be against Dooly County on September 12th.

Coach Swaney says he has been very impressed with the leadership of quarterback Dustin Eckert. He threw for 117 yards and two touchdowns against Miller County.
