Washington church demolition begins

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, N.C. - A historic church damaged by a fire earlier this year in Washington is now being demolished.

Crews started the work Tuesday to tear down the First Christian Church on East 2nd St.

The church caught fire in late April and firefighters worked for hours to put it out.

On Tuesday, parishioners gathered to watch the 123-year-old church come down. For them, it brought back a lot of memories.

“I grew up in the church and I was heartbroken when it burned.” Kathy Simpson said. “But I've done all the grieving that I can and I'm ready for new beginnings and this is the first step.”

The plans for the next church aren't worked out yet. WNCT is told that in the coming months they will decide on a site and plans for a new building.
