Gene Kirkconnell is the News Director at WRBL-TV and wrbl.com.
Gene has served as a journalist, content leader, and media executive in numerous positions during the course of his career.
He has worked for a wire service, newspapers, radio stations, television stations, and websites across the Southeastern U.S.
Gene got a taste of the news business in his very first job, working as a newspaper delivery boy for the Times-Picayune in New Orleans, Louisiana.
During high school, Gene worked as a newspaper reporter and as an on-air host at a local radio station, WHEP-AM in Foley, Alabama.
Gene’s work as a journalist has allowed him to interview rock stars and three presidents. It has taken him inside the eyes of many hurricanes, aboard military airplanes and helicopters, and to foreign countries. Most importantly reporting, photojournalism, and producing has blessed him with the opportunity to meet and tell the stories of hundreds of people.
“My job is to empower our team at WRBL-TV and wrbl.com to tell great stories about the people and communities in East Alabama and the Chattahoochee Valley,” said Kirkconnell. “I work with great team mates to share accurate, interesting stories with our neighbors. These stories enable folks to make decisions about their lives, whether it’s taking cover during a tornado warning or sharing the excitement from Toomer’s Corner as the Auburn Family celebrates a big win. I love my job.”
Gene is the recipient of numerous journalism and media awards including the George Foster Peabody Award, Emmy Awards, Edward R. Murrow Awards, and others.
When he’s not at work, Gene enjoys spending time with his family, writing, reading, listening to music, travel, and learning new things.
