Matthew Cassada is currently a 5th year senior at the University of Georgia. He is pursuing two degrees, studying both atmospheric sciences and geography in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Matthew is also working on a certificate in Geographic Information Systems.
Matthew hopes to become a broadcast meteorologist in the future. Right now, he helps assist and coordinate with two student-run Facebook groups, AthensGAWeather and NorthGAWeatherAuthority. Both groups provide weekly weather updates and severe weather coverage for the city of Athens and north Georgia. Together, these groups provide coverage to more than 70,000 members. His work with these groups includes creating graphics, on-screen coverage, and writing posts for severe weather coverage.
In the past, Matthew was a former writer for the Red & Black Newspaper, the official student-run newspaper at the University of Georgia. At the newspaper, he contributed to covering sports-related news, including covering the Ice Dawgs Hockey Team & the UGA Women’s Club Soccer team.
When not covering severe weather in Athens, Matthew works as a Resident Assistant for University Housing, providing both a safe and comfortable living space for four different on-campus residence halls.
In his free time, Matthew helps contribute to the University of Georgia AMS Chapter and helps develop future projects that can influence and grow the Atmospheric Sciences department at the university.
From his early beginnings growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Matthew has always seen weather coverage as an important part of your daily news coverage and how easily it can impact your daily life. At WRBL this summer, he is not only excited to improve both his graphic’s development and severe weather coverage, but also the chance to see how weather develops and influences the city of Columbus
