Gangster Disciples gang members indicted
A former DeKalb County police officer is among the 22 Georgians named in a massive federal indictment unsealed Wednesday against the Gangster Disciples, a violent street gang operating in 24 states.
The indictment filed in Atlanta identifies 32 alleged gang members, and a second indictment in Memphis, Tenn., charges 16 more. All are accused of participating in organized criminal activity, and the crimes alleged include murder, drug trafficking, robbery, carjacking, extortion, wire fraud, credit card fraud, and bank fraud.
The indictment says former DeKalb County police officer 25-year-old Vancito Gumbs admits he killed people as a “hitman” for the gang while he was a cop. DeKalb Chief James Conroy says Gumbs had been on the force less than two years when the department received a tip that he was involved with illegal drugs.
Justice Department: NC “bathroom bill” violates civil rights
The Justice Department warns the State of North Carolina on Wednesday that its new law limiting bathroom access violates the civil rights of transgender people.
In a letter to Gov. Pat McCrory, Vanita Gupta, the top civil rights lawyer for the Justice Department, says “both you and the State of North Carolina” were in violation of civil rights law, and gave McCrory until Monday to decide “whether you will remedy these violations.”
A Justice Department official says federal officials hope the state would agree to comply voluntarily with federal civil rights law by abandoning the measure. The anonymous official says it can use an ultimatum to force the state’s compliance — denying federal funds or asking a court to do so if North Carolina does not abandoned the “bathroom bill”, House Bil 2.
