Police, firefighters to honor autistic man at funeral Friday

COLUMBUS, Ga — Friends and family say goodbye Friday to an autistic man who touched many hearts in the community.

The funeral service for Deonn Carter will start at 1 p.m. at Cascade Hill Church on 54th Street.

Carter was a bagger and stocker at the Piggly Wiggly on River Road and developed a special bond with firefighters and police officers who shop there regularly.

Police tell News 3 there will be a ceremonial honor guard to honor Carter and a police hat will be placed with his casket. Carter’s friends in blue have also volunteered to be pall bearers.

Carter was shot on August 9 on his way to get his morning mail. He died Saturday.

Police continue to search for suspects.
