LEE COUNTY, Ala. – One man is in custody after leading deputies on a high-speed chase across Lee County.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones tells News 3 the call came in before noon at a store on U.S. Highway 80 about a suspicious man.
After a short while deputies initiated a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 80 in Crawford when the suspect drove away and a pursuit began on Alabama Highway 169 into Opelika.
The man turned on the southbound ramp on I-85.
Deputies then attempted to deploy spike strips just north of exit 58 on I-85, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
Jones says at one point deputies had the vehicle boxed in, but the suspect escaped and made a U-turn northbound in the southbound lane and almost hit a deputy when shots are fired by Lee County Deputies.
The pursuit continued northbound into oncoming traffic when the suspect attempted to go between an 18-wheeler and a bridge rail at exit 60. The suspect’s vehicle then became stuck where deputies took the suspect into custody.
At the moment, we do not know the suspect’s name or pending charges against the suspect.
Jones also says the vehicle used in the high-speed chase was a stolen vehicle that was recently reported to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Alabama State Troopers, Opelika Police Department, and Lee County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the incident.
