Republican leaders say Medicaid expansion is unlikely to become a reality unless lawmakers come up with a funding source.
Alabama is one of 14 states that have not moved to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.
House Ways and Means Chairman Steve Clouse said the issue is “where is the money going to come from.”
Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh said the state cannot afford the cost of expansion.
However, House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels says Medicaid expansion remains a priority for House Democrats. He said a lottery and legalized sports betting are possible revenue sources.
Republican Gov. Kay Ivey agreed to have discussions with Democrats about expansion and other Democratic caucus priorities, but has made no further commitment.
