AUBURN, Ala — An Auburn University football player was arrested Wednesday on charges of attempting to elude a police officer and possession of a firearm without a permit, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirms.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones says Stephen Roberts was arrested with a pistol on Harmon Drive in Auburn and taken to jail at around 10:40 p.m.
A police check on the gun confirmed Roberts had it illegally.
Jones says both of the charges against Roberts are considered misdemeanors in Alabama and carry a penalty of no more than one year in jail and up to a $6,000 fine.
He also says Roberts bonded out of jail for $2,000 later the same night.
“Coach (Gus) Malzahn is aware,” an Auburn spokesman says in a statement Friday morning. “He is gathering all the facts and will handle the situation appropriately.”
