AUBURN Ala. — An Auburn pastor is stepping down and passing the baton after 52 years of service at three different churches.
Church member Betty Sims says the congregation is sad to see their senior pastor leave after 26 years.
“He’s a wonderful pastor and a wonderful friend and a wonderful minister and spreader of God’s word,” said Sims.
Mathison’s wife Monteigne says the preaching won’t stop just because her husband’s getting older.
“It’s a requirement the year that you’re 72 that you are no longer the senior pastor of a church. He’s definitely not retiring from preaching so all I’ve said is were still going to be doing the same thing, but it will just be in a different place,” said Mathison.
Retiring Senior Pastor George Mathison says he’s leaving what he considers a second home.
“I appreciate the love that they’ve shown to my family, putting up with us and being so sweet, kind and loving means more to us then words can express,” said Mathison.
Many people in the congregation were emotional because they know their Senior Pastor must go, but they are happy that he will get to spend more time with his family.
