LEE COUNTY, Ala. — The Smiths Water and Sewer Authority announces Thursday residents in Lee County must follow water usage guidelines in response to Alabama’s Emergency Drought Declaration.

A statement by the water utilities provider says conditions in Alabama continue to decline rapidly thanks to the lack of rain.

SWSA says all customers must now follow these outdoor usage restrictions:

  • No outdoor water use between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST
  • Houses with even address numbers may only use water outdoors on even numbered calendar days
  • Houses with odd address numbers may only use water outdoors on odd numbered calendar days
  • Hydrants may not be used for anything other than fire fighting, public health, safety, or flushing

The statement also asks customers to respect the following home water conservation tips:

  • Wash only full loads of dishes and laundry
  • Take shorter showers; reducing shower time by one or two minutes can save up to 150 gallons of water per month
  • Check for plumbing leaks regularly and make immediate repairs
  • Turn off the tap when brushing teeth.

SWSA says water conservation is any beneficial reduction in water loss, waste, or use. The company asks customers to do their part in preserving this precious resource.
