OPELIKA, Ala. — Police say a man was shot and killed Thursday morning in the 500 block of South Antioch Circle.
Captain Shane Healey says in a release officers responded at 4:28 a.m. and found a 29-year-old male shot several times and lying behind one of the apartments. Officers say the man showed no signs of life.
Assistant Lee County Coroner Gene Manning pronounced the man dead on the scene at 5:12 a.m. The release says the body is now at the medical examiner’s office.
The Opelika man was identified as 29-year-old Dontavious Jones.
Trevarian Goodman has lived in the neighborhood for six years. He says Jones was like a brother to him,and he does not know why someone would want to harm him. Goodman says Jones did not bother anyone in the neighborhood, and he brightened many days.
Goodman says he is used to the violence in the neighborhood. “People are getting killed all the time,” Goodman said. “It’s like a normal thing now, like they are used to doing it. They don’t care anymore. They are killing young people my age, older people. They are killing anything. They are killing everybody.”
Opelika Police say this was a targeted shooting, and they do not believe there is someone going around and shooting random individuals.
