MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Police say a tractor trailer truck carrying milk eastbound on Interstate 10 collided with two utility trucks, fell off of the Bayway Bridge, and plunged into Mobile Bay.
A spokesman for the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened just after 5 a.m. Saturday morning.
News 3’s sister station WKRG reports the driver of the Bordon Dairy 18-wheeler was conscious and alert after the accident. He was not seriously injured.
Senior Trooper Wade Fail responded to the 911 call within 15 minutes of the crash.
“When I turned through the bridges, I saw the truck right here and the driver was standing on this little platform,” Fail says. “He appeared to be in shock. He had visible signs of burning. His clothes were burned and his left arm was burned.”
Fail says not only is it miraculous the driver survived the fall from the bridge, but that he managed to pull himself out of the cabin that was quickly engulfed in flames.
The two power trucks were on their way to Florida for Hurricane clean-up, according to WKRG.
The accident remains under investigation.
