BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Ramsey High School student athlete remains hospitalized Wednesday after he suffered a heat-related emergency during a workout on Tuesday, June 5.
According to Birmingham City Schools, the student began to show signs of distress during a workout, and coaches reacted quickly and provided care until first responders arrived on the scene.
“Each member school of the BCS district has an Emergency Action Plan related to athletic practices and events which establises protocols and procedures in response to athletic accidents or emergencies. In addition to these plans, extra precautions are taken in the summer months to ensure the safety of our student athletes,” a statement from the school system to CBS 42 said.
According to a GoFundMe reportedly set up to help his family with medical expenses, the teen was placed in a medically induced coma and is fighting for his life at Children’s Hospital.
