The Central High Red Devils baseball team appears to be on a mission following two big first round state playoff victories. They’re our WRBL Athletes of the Week.
The Red Devils have a new attitude you might say.
The Devils baseball program has always been recognized as one of the best in the state and now once again appears to be headed in the right direction.
Last week in Alabama state 7A playoffs action, the Red Devil bats were on fire as they swept the Prattville Lions 10-0 in game one and by the exact score in game two.
“It feels great. All the hard work has finally paid off. The past four years, we haven’t been able to get it done. We finally have. It feels really good,” said senior second baseman Jackson Cook.
“We’ve played a lot better together this year, stringing together more hits. We can control the big innings a little bit. We are just a better baseball team overall,” said Evan Baber.
“It’s good that we are playing the second round at home. It’s a good environment. The team we are playing, they’re a pretty good team. We are just going to have to go out, execute, and do what we have been doing,” junior pitcher Tanner Belcher said.
Most of the players on this year’s team seem to credit Coach Bobby Howard with the team’s recent success.
“Coach Howard just brings a lot to the table. He pushes us on and off the field to get better every day. I like it,” said sophomore catcher Slade Gorman.
“The way coach stayed on to us and made sure we kept pushing and stayed on task. He don’t play no games with us. It helps us focus in. That’s why we got as far as we did so far,” said senior outfield Jermond Williams.
Meanwhile, making it to the second round is big but somehow we knew that the Red Devils weren’t quite finished yet.
“We are proud of them, but we are not satisfied. We still are trying to get better each particular day. The kids have responded to our staff. Our staff has done a great job as far as teaching them and keeping them on the edge and keeping them sharp,” Howard said.
And so with a three game series with Auburn High looming this Friday, we say good luck and congratulations to the red hot Central High Red Devil baseball team out WRBL Athletes of the Week.
