UPDATE: Suspect in custody following Warren Williams Apartment Homes deadly shooting

UPDATE: 2/21:2019: Columbus Police say 17-year-old Derick Garnell Jones has turned himself in to police in connection to the shooting. Jones is charged with the murder of 50-year-old Dorian Gibson.

Police say his preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Saturday, 02/22/2020 at 8am, but will be rescheduled for Wednesday 02/26/2020 at 9am.

UPDATE: Police say no one was in the apartment when the Homicide Unit went in.

UPDATE: A standoff ensued after police were led to believe that a possible suspect was in apartment unit 107H.

Police say several people left the unit and told them no one else was left inside. However, police wanted to make sure themselves.

Authorities say they were waiting on a judge to sign a search warrant for the apartment.

So far, no arrests have been made.

UPDATE 10:02 P.M. 01/17/2020: Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton has confirmed the identity of the victim in the deadly shooting at Warren Williams Homes as 50-year-old Dorian Gibson. Gibson was pronounced dead at Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital at 6:46 p.m. Friday evening. Newton says Gibson suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

UPDATE 7:50P.M. 01/17/20: Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton confirms there is one fatality following a shooting at Warren Williams Apartment Homes.

COLUMBUS, Ga (WRBL) – Columbus police are investigating a shooting at the Warren Williams Apartment Homes at the intersection of 13th Street and Wynnton Road.

The victim was transported to a local area hospital’s emergency room.
