CPD: 10-year-old boy found safe after reported abduction

2:30 P.M. — Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson’s office has released a statement on a 10-year-old who was believed to be missing Monday night.

A couple of kids reported Monday night that their friend had been abducted in the area of Bellanca St. and Ventura Dr. Columbus Police say there was no abduction, and the case was simply a misunderstanding.

A representative in the mayor’s office says police were working off of witness statements reporting an abduction, but no family had reported a child missing.

“Upon further investigation, it was revealed there had not been an abduction,” the representative states.

A police update released Tuesday afternoon says the van witnesses saw take the boy away had actually been driven by the boy’s relative.

1:15 P.M. — The Columbus Police Department confirms a 10-year-old boy is safe after police originally reported investigating his abduction.

A press release confirms the white van suspected in the incident was being operated by a relative. The child has been returned home safe.

COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Columbus Police Department confirms an urgent search is on for a 10-year-old boy who appears to have been abducted Monday night.

A press release says the child was seen being pulled into a white van on Ventura Drive near the intersection with Ballanca Street at about 8:00 p.m.

Police say two 12-year-old boys were witnesses to the alleged abduction. They tell police the suspect is a black male in his late 30s or early 40s and driving a white utility van similar to the picture above provided by police.

The witnesses say the van has a Georgia tag with a “K” as one of the letters on the plate. There was a blue or red ladder on top and a ladder on the left back door. Each of the two rear doors had a rectangular shaped window. The windshield, two front door windows, and the two rear windows were described as having “limo tint.”

The missing child is a white male with black hair, wearing an orange t-shirt and jeans. He was last seen riding a green bicycle, but police were not able to find a bicycle at the scene.
