COLUMBUS, Ga — Cusseta Road is now clear between Brown Avenue and 20th Avenue after a two hour standoff between police and a man making threats against the officers.
Major J.D. Hawk tells News 3 a man called 911 around 4:50 a.m. saying he would shoot anyone that came near his property. Police responded to a duplex in the 300 block of Bragg Smith Street after the man called back repeating his threats several times.
Hawk says the man, now identified as Michael Whetstone, appears to have been severely intoxicated.
He says Whetstone continued making threats for several hours as police surrounded the home. Police evacuated neighbors nearby and blocked off Cussetta Road in both directions of travel.
Parents on the scene tell News 3 their children were not able to be picked up from their regular bus stops. They say buses were rerouted and one of the detectives helped drive students to school.
Police were able to convince Whetstone to come outside and surrender shortly after 8 a.m. He is now in custody and faces charges.
