PHENIX CITY, Ala — A man may now face manslaughter charges after a 4-year-old girl he allegedly hit with his car died Saturday afternoon, Phenix City police confirm.
Captain George Staudinger says the girl and her mother were hit by 30-year-old Justin Omar Ford while they were trying to cross Colin Powell Parkway on August 28.
Staudinger says the two were walking on the crosswalk at Colin Powell Parkway when Ford’s car entered the roadway heading towards Highway 280.
He says both the girl and her mother, 25-year-old Zaneka Huff, sustained head injuries from the accident. He adds alcohol was “definitely a factor” in the crash.
Staudinger says the toddler’s injuries were more serious and she was airlifted to an Atlanta trauma center. She passed away Saturday.
Huff was released from Midtown Medical Center with less severe injuries.
Staudinger says Ford was initially charged with two counts of felony assault and police will now file charges for manslaughter.
Ford is still in Russell County Jail as of Wednesday morning.
