UPDATE: Columbus police say victim “no doubt run over” as death investigation continues

UPDATE 03/02/2021 – Investigators say they have made an arrest in the deadly hit and run of Curtis Ledbetter.

According to officials,  21-year-old David Lee Winters, Jr. has been arrested in connection to Ledbetter’s death.

Winters is being charged with Homicide by Vehicle 1st Degree (Felony), Hit and Run, and various other traffic charges, according to police.

Winters is scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court on March 3 at 9:00 a.m.


UPDATE: Feb. 26, 2021: Columbus Police at 4:09 p.m. issued a press release clarifying information previously relayed to news outlets.

The victim in this case is Curtis Ledbetter, 24.

On Feb. 24 at 9:42 p.m. responded to a shooting call in the area of 29th Street and 3rd Avenue. Police discovered Ledbetter suffering from trauma to the head. Emergency Medical Services arrived and determined Ledbetter was dead.

Deputy coroner Elizabeth Allison pronounced Ledbetter dead at 10:21 p.m. The homicide unit arrived and took over the investigation.

UPDATE – Columbus Police say the victim was “no doubt run over by a vehicle.”

CPD Chief of Staff Katina Williams said the initial call came as a shooting because there had been a shootout nearby.

She says the victim might have been shot prior to being struck by a vehicle. Police are investigating and have not released any information about a suspect.

The victim’s body has been sent to Atlanta for autopsy.


COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) – Columbus police are on the scene of a homicide investigation near 29th Street and 3rd Avenue.

Police say the victim is a black male, aged 26.
