Four year Columbus State assistant basketball coach Ben Hicks is heading down to Americus to be the head coach for the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes.
He takes over the job from athletics director Mike Leeder who was the A.D. and basketball coach.
Hicks remembers a conversation when Robert Moore hired him at Columbus State. They said then that Hicks would soon be a head coach. It happened faster than they even thought.
“Coach Moore gave me a lot of responsibility. He allowed me to coach. I was involved in every aspect of the program,” Hicks said. “I really thank him for that. Without those responsibilities, I’m not sure I would be ready. Being that he gave me those responsibilities, I’m ready to take on the big responsibility.”
“It was hard to let him go,” Moore said. “But, it’s just like letting your son go off to college. You have to let him go. He is going to be a great guy for Georgia Southwestern. He does a great job recruiting and on the floor. It should be interesting when we play the hurricanes next year.”
We asked both Coach Moore and Coach Hicks if the friendly competition has started yet. They said it had, but Coach Moore says he is helping Hicks and sharing notes as he begins the recruiting process in Americus.
