Friend of Americus officer murder suspect says he’s shocked by friend’s actions

AMERICUS, Ga. – The community is now mourning the loss of two beloved police officers.

We learned more about the suspect Minquell Lembrick.

We caught up with a man who says he was his friend.

He says, despite Lembrick’s extensive criminal record he can’t wrap his mind around why he would do something so drastic.

Shawn Vanover is the name of the friend.

Lembrick is accused of shooting and killing Americus Officer Ryan Smarr and Officer Jody Smith.

Smith was an officer on the Campus of Georgia Southwestern State University.

Vanover says, he’s shocked about the actions of his friend but despite this–he’s choosing to keep a positive outlook.

“Everything happens for a reason…you know? no mistakes made man,” says Vanover.

Lembrick took his own life yesterday after dozens of armed police had him cornered in a home for about two hours.

We also learned Lembrick’s criminal history is about 32 pages long.
