Gas prices falling as Thanksgiving travel period starts

COLUMBUS, Ga – Call it an unexpected- but welcomed holiday surprise. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Georgia is seeing a drop in gas prices. This unexpected gift comes just in time for the start of the busy travel season.

Charles Davis, of Columbus, says it’s something to be thankful for at Thanksgiving—lower gas prices across Georgia.

“It will permit me to go see my mother, my brother who’s in Albany, my auntie, and I’ll travel to see my mother in Florida,” says Davis.

The good news, too, if you’re traveling outside Georgia, GasBuddy says gas prices have dropped in 44 of 50 states.  Right now, the national average is $2.11 per gallon.

According to, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Georgia has fallen by just a little over six cents in the past week. That’s an unexpected holiday surprise, especially given the recent problems along the Colonial Pipeline.

Given a deadly explosion at the end of October and a rupture in the pipeline in September– fuel shortages and price spikes were feared.  GasBuddy, however, estimates this year will be the third cheapest Thanksgiving holiday travel weekend in a decade, projecting motorists will save close to $1.7 billion dollars on gas during the Thanksgiving travel weekend.

GasBuddy Senior Fuel Analyst Gregg Laskoski says he expects the fall in gas prices to continue for the immediate future. He did tell News 3 it’s a bit too soon to project what the Christmas travel season will bring. But if there are no pipeline or refinery problems, gas prices should remain lower.
