APPLING, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a 16-year-old east Georgia boy has drowned in a lake near the Georgia-South Carolina line.

Columbia County sheriff’s officials say Robert D. Ballard Jr. of Evans was swimming with friends Sunday afternoon, when he went underwater and didn’t resurface at the Lake Springs Recreation Area in Appling.

Officials say Ballard’s girlfriend tried to rescue him, but was unsuccessful. She swam to shore and called for help.

Local media reports a dive team found Ballard and he was then pronounced dead.

Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins says the drowning is being called an accident, and no foul play is suspected. A full autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Ballard was a 10th grade student and football player at Greenbrier High School in Evans, Ga.
