Woman found fatally shot inside vehicle at BP gas station in Atlanta

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) - - Police are trying to determine what led to the fatal shooting of a woman found inside a vehicle in DeKalb County early Tuesday morning.

The body of 25-year-old Avery Birthrong was found inside a car behind the BP gas station at the intersection of Hugh Howell and Stone Mountain roads.

According to the Gwinnett Police Department, the shooting happened in Gwinnett County, and the victim was then driven to the gas station in DeKalb County.

CBS46's Rebekka Schramm spoke with a woman who said the victim may have been killed over a $70 debt. LaShun Parks said her son is the boyfriend of the victim. She got a call from him early this morning. He was distraught, she said.

“He just said, ‘Mom, she’s gone. They killed her,'” Parks said.

At the scene, police questioned the boyfriend and his co-worker who both were with her at the time of the shooting. After the shooting, they apparently drove 1.8 miles to the BP where they parked behind the gas station and called police.

Police said they do not consider either man to be a suspect.
