Facebook is announcing its second major tweak to its algorithm this month, saying it will prioritize news based on users’ votes. It’s a normal part of everyday life for millions of Americans, checking in to Facebook to see the latest updates from your friends and family and of course, updating your own status.

Who else is keeping up-to-date on your life?

Facebook Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan says it’s important Facebook users understand who they’re sharing with. Egan recommends everyone do a privacy check up.   “We play a lot of games with apps and you need to make sure you’re comfortable with apps and the info they get through Facebook.  You can access a privacy check up in the bottom right corner in your mobile app.”

Egan also suggests performing a security check up.  “If you take a security check up, Facebook will walk you through the steps and ask you questions and make sure you’ve got your settings in a place that will protect your information.”

After your privacy and security check ups are completed, Egan says to remember to report anything which doesn’t look or feel right to you on Facebook.

Her most important piece of advice?  “Make sure you know who you’re sharing your stuff with.  That’s the first step.  Make sure you know those people can be trusted and your comfortable with them so they won’t take that information and share it beyond.”

By understanding the information you’re sharing on Facebook and taking control of it, Egan says the details of your life and your family’s lives are limited to the people you choose to share with.
