Iconic Columbus coach dies at 96


Columbus, GA – Sad news for the Columbus sports community tonight.  Local coaching icon Bubba Ball passed away today.  Coach Ball’s career started at Baker High School in the early 50’s.  He led his Lions basketball teams to two state basketball championships during his 14-year stint at Baker.  He was Shaw’s first head football coach when the school opened its doors in 1978.  Over the years Coach Ball touched the lives of thousands of young athletes who revere him still to this day.  Among Coach Ball’s many honors was being inducted into the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame.  His wife, Debbie, a renowned coach in her own right, is also a member of the same Sports Hall of Fame.  Coach Bubba Ball was 96 years old.
