LaGrange business to host gala benefiting Special Olympians across Georgia

LAGRANGE, Ga. — One LaGrange business has special plans to support athletes with special needs across Georgia. The Dermatology Institute is sponsoring the Glow Gala, aimed at raising money to send 100 athletes like Tyler McCoy and Paige Copeland to the Winter Special Olympics in January.

McCoy has a medal for just about every sport imaginable, including competitive dance. Each medal means something special to McCoy because of his support system.

“I love my dad and step-mom, all my family,” McCoy told News 3. “That’s why I do this.”

“When I was younger, that’s what I had,” Copeland said. “So I’m just letting those people be what I had.”

Adrienne McDaniel with the Dermatology Insinuate knows all about special needs. Her brother has Down’s Syndrome, and he suffers from a number of other physical and mental disabilities.

“We’re hoping to be able to sponsor them so that they won’t have any child left behind,” McDaniel said. “All of them will be able to participate in the games if they would like to.”

McDaniel says competing in the Special Olympics liberates her brother in ways she’s never seen before.

“Like Tyler said, he can do everything. He said that many times: he can do everything,” McDaniel expressed. “And that’s the mindset we want to instill in these children and people with special needs because they’re special needs. But they can do anything. There are no limits.”

The Glow Gala will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 the Dermatology Institute, located at 1075 LaFayette Pkwy in LaGrange. 100% of proceeds will go to benefit Special Olympians.
