Lee Co. coroner confirms Opelika mobile home park murder

OPELIKA, Ala — Police say they are treating a man’s death as a homicide investigation after he was found shot on Hurst Street Sunday night.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris confirms 35-year-old Joseph Holloway was found at around 7:15 p.m. at the Brookhaven Mobile Home Park. Harris says the body is being sent to Montgomery for a full autopsy.

Residents say Holloway was a great man. One neighbor says to News 3 Holloway always helped her whenever she needed. The same woman says she heard shots Sunday night.

“I heard something, I thought it was firecrackers because we’re coming up to the holiday,” Winnie Robinson says. “Some man said ‘get in the house’, and that’s when I turned around and saw the body laying in the road. He said, he’s dead; get in your house! I said who is it? They said Joseph, and I said oh no, not Joseph. Joseph was a God sent person to me. He was so nice to me.”

Captain Shane Healey of the Opelika Police Department says they are in the early stages of the investigation, but need the public’s help in getting all the pieces of Sunday night put together.

Captain Healey urges anyone with information on the shooting to call the Opelika Police Department at 334-705-5220 or call the Secret Witness Hotline at 334-745-8665.
