2 injured in Smiths Station car crash with train

Local News

SMITHS STATION, Ala. — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency confirms two people were injured late Thursday night when a car crossing Lee Road 430 was hit by a train.

The driver of the car was Scott Cox (44) of Phenix City, and the passenger was Yulanda Haddan (43) of Phenix City.

An ALEA representative says one woman with life-threatening injuries was airlifted to Emory Medical Center in Atlanta. News 3 has also confirmed the crash happened just after 9 p.m. and the crossing is near Smiths Station High School.

There are no railroad safety guards at this location

The ALEA said that the driver was traveling along Lee Road 430 and turned onto Lee Road 927 and attempted to cross the train tracks, but the pickup truck was hit by a train.

The driver and passenger were both ejected from the truck, and the train conductor did not sustain any injuries.

Law enforcement officials urge folks to take extra caution when approaching a railroad crossing.

“You’re not going to win versus a train if there is an impact or some type of collision there,” Cpl. Jesse Thornton of the ALEA said. “Regardless of how that railroad crossing is constructed, whether there’s arm bars there, a stop sign, whether there’s lights up, regardless of the situation, you can never be too careful at a train crossing. If you cross those tracks and there’s a train coming, that conductor is not going to be able to stop that train.”

Smiths Station Mayor, Bubba Copeland said Thursday night’s accident is the third one at that crossing in recent memory. He added that he is excited that for the construction of signals and crossing arms at the crossing will begin in the first part of January.
