OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – Search intensifies for the person who killed “Baby Jane Doe,” then dumped her body in a wooded area in Opelika.

Thursday, The Lee County District Attorney’s Office announced it had secured a $5,000.00 reward in the case from the Governor’s Office. Opelika investigators also reveal they believe the child’s killer is from the East Alabama area and knew the area where her remains were found.

The “Baby Jane Doe” case was born on January 28th, 2012 when a small skull was found behind a mobile home off Hurst Street. Six years later, in a public plea for information, Opelika investigators are asking anyone to come forward and help them deliver justice for Baby Jane Doe.

‘It may be difficult to pick up the phone and call, but it’s the right thing to do. I am sure there is a family member, who is afraid to say something.  A brother, a sister, a grandmother or mother who knows who this child is.” said Sgt. Alfred White with OPD.

Investigators believe Baby Jane Doe lived and was murdered in East Alabama by someone who knew the area of Hurst Street well.

“It makes me believe whoever did this to this child lived in this trailer park and is from the area. This is an area where an outsider would not just stumble across to dump a body,” said Sgt. White.

Baby Jane Doe was killed between 2010 and 2012 when she was between 3 and 7-years-old. Investigators believe Jane Doe is the little girl in pictures from vacation bible school at Greater Peace Baptist Church in Opelika. The little girl in the photos has never been identified since they were brought to police back in 2016.

It’s believed she suffered long-term physical abuse at the hands of her killer and the beatings damaged her left eye, leaving her blind and deformed with a scar on her face.  Police say any tip, no matter how small, may lead to her name and justice.

“Once they have the identity, we can move to the next phase and solve this crime and figure out who did this to this little girl and get her justice,” said District Attorney Brandon Hughes.
