Monday afternoon a 9-year-old boy is recovering in an Atlanta Hospital after being shot.

Our media partner, The Ledger-Enquirer reports it happened Sunday night at Warren Williams Homes on Wynnton Road.

Officials say the young boy was shot in the head. He was initially taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital, but later transported to a hospital in Atlanta.

Police are calling the shooting an accidental weapon discharge.

Major J.D. Hawk with Columbus police is calling the incident a freak accident, saying the fire arm went off after it hit the ground.

Sunday night the boy’s condition was listed as serious, but no word on his condition Monday afternoon.
