Auburn student, Gage Fenwick running for District 79 seat

Local News

AUBURN, Ala.- Gage Fenwick is a 21-year-old junior at Auburn University where he studies economics. Even though he may be the youngest candidate in the running for Mike Hubbard’s vacant District 79 seat, he knows exactly why he wants to run. He believes the people in the district deserve another option on the ballot.

“We have many Republicans running, and I have every respect for the Republican party, but when you have just one party on the ballot, it limits the peoples options, and that leads to corruption,” Fenwick said. “By giving people more options decreases the amount of corruption and gives people another voice.”

Fenwick is running as a Libertarian. Fenwick says some of the big issues for him are looking at what he calls the fiscal irresponsibility of the state, enacting criminal justice reform where non-violent offenders would not serve prison time, term-limits and initiatives and referendums.

Fenwick says he brings a call against corruption and voice for the younger generation. He says the district is very important to him, and he wants to serve his community, and is not worried about possibly taking over Mike Hubbard’s seat.

“I believe the people in District 79 realize now the problems that are occurring in our state government, and they have a real opportunity now to elect someone who is going to call out that corruption, someone who is really going to bring liberty to our state and allow the people to make decisions for themselves through a representative that is truly going to represent them and not the businesses that he profits from,” Fenwick said.

Fenwick joins the four other Republicans in the race: Sandy Toomer, Brett Smith, Joe Lovvorn and Jay Conner.

Third-party candidates, independent candidates, and minor party candidates seeking ballot access are advised that their deadline for filing the appropriate notification, petitions, or supporting paperwork with the Secretary of State is Sept. 13, 2016 at 5 p.m.
