Auburn woman killed, other injured in tractor-trailer crash on I -85

AUBURN, Ala (WRBL) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of an Auburn woman killed in a tractor-trailer crash on I -85 Wednesday afternoon.

Lee County Coroner, Bill Harris, says 20-year-old Cassidy Meadows was killed instantly when her Kia was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer carrying a load of jet fuel.

Harris says Meadows was in traffic caused by another crash. Harris says that is when the tractor-trailer failed to stop for the backed-up traffic and struck Meadows vehicle and two other vehicles from behind, driving Meadows vehicle into the bridge support of the 51 exit, pinning her in the wreckage.

Harris says it took Auburn Fire nearly three hours to pull Meadows from her vehicle due to the severity of the damage.

Meadows was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:54 p.m.

Harris says four other people from the other two vehicles were transported to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

The tractor-trailer driver was not injured. There was no leakage of the fuel load from the tractor-trailer.

The northbound lane of I-85 was closed for several hours while the fuel was offloaded from the tanker and the wreckage could be cleared. The accident remains under investigation by the Auburn Police and Lee County Coroner’s office.
