On Friday, the LaGrange Police Department warned people about a scam going around. Officials say scammers are calling people and saying they are being investigated by Police.

Officials say scammers are calling people and saying they are being investigated by police. Potential victims are being told they have an outstanding warrant for an unpaid debt, missed jury duty, or some minor infraction –and that a fine is due.

Scammers will then threaten legal action to manipulate people into handing over money. Scammers will demand payments by wire transfers through Greendot or prepaid credit card, or Moneygrams and Western Union Wire transfers.

In some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars are stolen by the scammers.

Police in Georgia, Kansas, Oregon, and Florida have been receiving reports of phone scammers impersonating local police officers.
