Chambers Co. Deputy dragged by vehicle and injured during stop on I-85

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Ala. (WRBL) - The Chambers County Sheriff's Office is thankful one of their own is still alive after being dragged and injured by a suspect in a fleeing vehicle during a traffic stop along Interstate 85.

Monday night, at approximately 8:05 PM, investigators say Deputy Colby Conway stopped a 2019 black Ford Edge for a traffic violation on I-85 near exit 70.  As Deputy Conway was talking to the driver, Teresa Diane Heard of Fairburn, Georgia, he received indicators of drug activity occurring within the vehicle.

Chief Deputy Richard Carter tells News 3 after Deputy Conway removed Heard from the vehicle, she told her male passenger to go.

"The passenger Kosiki McDowell maneuvered from the passenger side to the driver's side and began to flee.  As he was attempting to drive away, a struggle ensued between McDowell and Deputy Conway who was trying to get him out of the vehicle.   During the altercation, Deputy Conway's arm became trapped in the door as the suspect began to flee.  During this event Deputy Conway fired his weapon into the vehicle as he was able to free himself from the situation," said Chief Deputy Carter.

Investigators say Deputy Conway then began a vehicle pursuit until the suspect vehicle stopped at exit 66 in Lee County.  Additional deputies responded to his location and assisted in taking McDowell into custody.   The female, Teresa Heard, fled the scene of the traffic stop on foot and has not been located as of this moment.  After the apprehension of McDowell, a large suitcase containing many vacuum sealed packages of suspected marijuana was found in the vehicle.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's State Bureau of Investigations was called to the scene to assist in the investigation due to the Deputy discharging his firearm, which is standard procedure for the Chambers County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Conway was transported to the emergency room by other members of the Sheriff's Office.  He was released a short time later.

"I worry about these guys every single night, especially working the interstate. There is so much evil in this world, and it's running up and down Interstate 85. Child trafficking, drug trafficking, weapons. Our guys are still out there doing the job," said Carter.

Kosiki Kione McDowell has been charged with Assault 1, Felony Attempting to Elude and Trafficking in Marijuana.  He is currently being held in the Chambers County Detention Facility.Chambers Co. Deputy dragged by vehicle and injured during stop on I-85
