Update: Deadly River Road crash involved city truck

COLUMBUS (WRBL) - Columbus police are currently investigating a deadly vehicle crash on River Road involving a city of Columbus truck, police said.

The collision happened after 9 a.m., Lt. Lance Deaton told News 3.

The man killed in the accident was identified as James Gibson of Fortson, Ga., according to Assistant Coroner Charles Newton. Gibson was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown campus, where he was pronounced dead. His body will be sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy, Newton said.

The truck involved in the crash is a Columbus Public Works truck that has a large claw and picks up yard debris. No charges have been filed against the truck driver, Deaton said.

Gibson's Mercedes sedan appears to have struck the city truck. River Road is three lanes at the point of the crash. There are two southbound lanes, a double yellow line that indicates no passing and one northbound lane.

The city truck is in the middle of the road in both the north and south lanes. The vehicle, which appears to have been traveling south, hit the truck's bed and went partially under the city truck.

Authorities are working the accident at River Road and Willett Drive in north Columbus.

Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services is also on the scene. The city's Risk Management is also at the scene, City Manager Isaiah Hugley said.

River Road was blocked at Willett.
