Richard W. Williams, Jr., Chapter of the Triples Nickles (555th P.I.A.)

11/16/2018 - The U.S. Senate passed a bill on Thursday that honors Columbus area Army veterans who served in the first all-black parachute unit in Fort Benning in December 1943.

Bill S.3237 was supported by Georgia senators David Perdue (R-GA) and Johnny Isakson (R-GA).

The bill honors the Triple Nickels who trained at Fort Benning and served in more airborne units than any others in history.

The Richard W. Williams, Jr. Chapter of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, known as the Triple Nickels, defended the U.S. in 20th century.

Many members of the Triple Nickels formed the Army's first and only all-black Ranger unit, the 2nd Ranger Company Airborne, which trained at Fort Benning.

Senator Isakson, who is chairmen of the Senate Committee n Veterans' Affairs, says, "I am glad to have the opportunity to thank them for their selfless actions and distinguished service."

A U.S. Post Office in Columbus, Georgia, will be designated as the "Richard W. Williams, Jr., Chapter of the Triple Nickles (555th P.I.A.) Post Office."
