COLUMBUS, Ga — Now is your chance to apply for a new job with a company expanding in Columbus.
As our city bids farewell to Road America, a customer service company with an office that is relocating to Florida, Columbus received word this week that another company plans to move into the company’s Victory Drive facility and offer even more jobs to our region.
Convergys Corporation, also a customer service firm, will take move into the space presently occupied by Road America. While 200 jobs are leaving with Road America’s departure, Convergys brings with it 450 new jobs.
Convergys’s decision to open a Columbus facility could not come at a better time. City economic leaders had just been brainstorming ideas to attract more companies like it to our area.
“When you go through a planning experience, you are never quite sure how it will turn out, but for us to get such an impressive announcement after completing the plan made for a nice coincidence,” Bill Murphy, Executive Vice President of Economic Development for the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, told News 3.
After news of the Convergys move broke, the Georgia Department of Labor immediately stepped in to help with recruitment needs for new hires. More than 300 people applied to work with the company as of Wednesday. The good news is that if you missed your opportunity, you’ll have another chance next Wednesday.
“We’ve got a lot of people who are still unemployed in this area. When you have a company that comes in like this offering the types of benefits and compensations,it’s a very exciting time to have that. We want to be able to fill those positions, fill those voids. Because again, the more people back to work does add to our economy,” says John Irvine, Career Center Manager of the Georgia Department of Labor.
Irvine reminds area employers the Georgia Department of Labor is always there to help companies with recruitment needs. He also encourages those looking for work to be sure they take advantage of services of his agency.
