DoD identifies Army National Guardsman who died in Afghanistan

Specialist Miguel L. Holmes of Hinesville, Georgia was identified as the soldier who died on May 6 in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, the Department of Defense confirmed. Holmes, 22, reportedly died of wounds from a non-combat incident. His death is currently under investigation.

Holmes served with the 1st Battalion, 118th field Artillery Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Savannah, Georgia. According to previous reporting from WSAV, the unit specialized in field artilerry and was a part of the Georgia Army National Guard.

The unit that Holmes was serving in was assigned to Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, a part of a NATO-led Resolute Support Mission, according to Gen. John F. Campbell in the Army.Mil report on the operation.
