WEDOWEE, Ala. (WRBL) – An East Alabama, high school teacher, is facing criminal charges of having sex with a student. He’s behind bars on Randolph County, on a $1 million bond.

Wedowee Police report on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, police responded to Randolph County High School regarding an allegation David Burkhalter, a 30-year-old, male teacher at the school was having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female student.

The Wedowee Police Department along with the assistance of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department and Clay County Sheriff’s Department immediately initiated an investigation. Investigators determined the accusations were credible and probable cause existed for an arrest.

Warrants were executed, and Mr. Burkhalter turned himself into law enforcement on the morning of Wednesday, February 13, 2019. Mr. Burkhalter is being held in the Randolph County Jail on eight (8) felony counts: two counts of Rape in the Second Degree, one count of Sodomy in the Second Degree, one count of Enticing a Child, two counts of Electronic Solicitation of a Child for Sex, and two counts of School Employee Sex Act with Student Less than 19 years of age.

Mr. Burkhalter is currently being held in the Randolph County Jail on a $1,000,000.00 bond pending further hearing.

Law enforcement is working alongside the Office of the District Attorney and the Randolph County School Board to ensure all appropriate steps are taken to ensure a thorough investigation and a successful prosecution of this matter. Friday, Robert Grantham who is the Director of Sales and Marketing with LBI Marketing along Tallapoosa Street in Alex City,  sent out a release regarding Burkhalter, who was a  former employee of Lake Broadcasting and its subsidiaries.
