Empowering girls is an important step in making sure young girls are successful in their future careers.
One woman says by teaching girls they can move to the head of class in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, anything is possible.
Day after day, girls across the country are being educated in our classrooms but are they learning what they need to be successful in traditionally male-dominated fields?
Female author and entrepreneur Dr. Cristal Glangchai, says opportunities for women in the STEM fields have come a long way.
She says teaching girls about entrepreneurship is a great place to start.
“For me, entrepreneurship isn’t just about starting a business. It’s about having a mindset of opportunities seeking, problem solving, risk-taking, not being afraid to try things and fail and knowing how to take an idea and turn it into a product by doing market market research, prototyping, product development, pitching and selling your product.”
Glangchai’s background as an engineer helped her to realize the importance of using technology for the good of society.
She says that’s where entrepreneurship comes in.
By empowering girls, they gain confidence and that confidence can help close the gender gap.
“There are a lot of things that have led to the gender gap and i don’t know if it’s societal iconography, media, things that girls are hearing at home, at school or a lack of female role models and mentors and i think the way we can solve this is through entrepreneurship.”
Glangchai says the future is bright for girls who have big dreams and even bigger career goals.
“Anything from a nanobot designer and a virtual reality designer, 3d printing of organs, mind-controlled objects where you can think “lights on,” and the lights come on. All of these things are being developed and researched and in 10-20 years from now, those are the jobs of the future.”
Glangchai says girls need to be taught to push themselves and to overcome challenges and when they know they can achieve, they are also empowered to succeed.
