EXCLUSIVE: Fiance loses bride in car crash one week before wedding

Local News

LAGRANGE, Ga. — The fiance of a deadly car crash victim is reflecting on the life he and his bride-to-be could have lived. News 3 traveled to LaGrange to sit down with Meghann Smith’s fiance Kenneth Belcher.

Smith, 24, was from LaGrange. She died on her way back home from a bachelorette party in Columbus. The party just happened to be one week before her wedding day.

An alleged drunk driver prevented the wedding though, hitting the car in which Smith was riding on I-185 early Sunday morning.  Belcher, 23, remembers the last words he told his wife-to-be: “I love you.”

News 3 spoke to Belcher in an exclusive interview to learn more about his late bride.

“She loved me unconditionally,” Belcher says. “People just sometimes don’t think that it can cause this much pain for a family when you drink and drive. But I know in my heart that Meghann would want me to forgive him.”

Belcher describes Smith as a giving person.

“She had a heart of gold and it was nowhere near full,” Belcher says. “She had all the love in the world to give.”

Belcher also reflects on how his loss affects his heart.

“It’s shattering into a million pieces. And some of those pieces were taken with her. And it’ll never be complete again.”

Like her loved ones, Ethel Kight Elementary School in LaGrange holds a special place in Smith’s heart. After graduating from LaGrange College two years ago, the elementary school offered Smith her first job.

Troup County Schools Communications Director Yolanda Stephen says grief counselors handled students Monday dealing with the loss of their teacher over the weekend. Other faculty members posted to an online message board, noting the late teacher’s warm personality.

“She was known for being nice and quiet, yet making a big impact, especially on students who needed help with reading,” Stephen says.

“We miss Meghann,” Belcher’s father Mike tells News 3. “For us, she was already part of the family.”

Kenneth Belcher says he had plans to own a farm with his bride Meghann and have three or four children. Belcher credits his bride-to-be for getting his life back on track to achieve his professional dream of becoming a nurse.
