Family, friends, Columbus Police celebrate retirement of beloved officer

Local News

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Dozens of friends, family and Columbus Police officers are saying farewell to a fellow officer who served the Columbus Police Department for nearly 40 years. News 3 was the only media outlet at the retirement of one of Columbus’s most beloved officers, Lt. Warren Dunlap.

Hundreds of people in the Fountain City notice Dunlap’s contagious smile everyday. But as the clock strikes midnight after a night of trick-or-treating, and as the calendar flips from October to November, Dunlap will face a new chapter in life: retirement.

Dunlap retires after serving 37 years in the Columbus Police Department. Police Chief Ricky Boren, state Rep. Calvin Smyre (D – Columbus), and many other officers and dignitaries complimented Dunlap for his courage. Many commended Dunlap on the way he has helped manage security at the annual Fountain City Classic. When asked how he dedicated a generation of service to protecting the community, Dunlap responded in a calm but reasonable manner.

“A lot of times you get into situations where people are hot headed or upset,” Dunlap said. “If you step back, listen to them, and let them know their opinion counts, that’s an effective way to deal with issues.”

Dunlap was first attracted to law enforcement as a way to help those around him. Whether he was with Heisman winners like Alabama’s Derrick Henry, his family by birth, or his family by badge, Lt. Dunlap will forever carry with him a distinguished career underscored by his love for others.

Dunlap says he will enjoy spending more time with he and his wife’s nine children combined, as well as 19 grandchildren. Dunlap also expects to do quite a bit of traveling during his retirement.
