FIRST ON 3: Opelika Walmart’s Secret Santa pays off $20,000 in layaways for families

OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – We have new information regarding Opelika Walmart’s Secret Santa. News 3 has confirmed an individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, has paid off  $20,000 in layaways focusing on accounts with toys for kids. A Walmart spokesperson tells us the amount is expected to grow as the Secret Santa continues their quest to share joy this Holiday season.

“When customers quietly pay off others’ layaway items, we’re reminded how good people can be. We’re honored to be a small part of these random acts of kindness,” said Tara Ashton, who works with Walmart as a Sr. Manager in National Media Relations.

News 3 is told the Secret Santa began paying the bills on Monday inside the Opelika store.  Ashton says the Secret Santa is focusing on accounts with toys for kids and continues to add more to the list. Ashton tells  News 3 she will share final numbers as soon as she has them.

Layaway is a payment plan allowing customers to choose gifts and pay for them over several months.  The installment plan is oftentimes the only way families can afford to buy gifts for their children during Christmas.

This Christmas season we have seen media giant Tyler Perry and Kid Rock pay off layaway accounts at other Walmarts.
