SALEM, Ala.- Taylor Payne is your average 11 year old. She is a 6th grader at West Smiths Station Elementary School.
She is big fan of country music, but there is one artist she listens to a lot: Blake Shelton. Payne even has a whole playlist on her phone dedicated to Blake Shelton and knows every word.
When she was in 2nd and 3rd grade, she was not into country music that much, but her mom listened to a lot of Blake Shelton, so Taylor became hooked. When Taylor’s father would call her mom’s cellphone, a Blake Shelton song was the ringtone. Back when she was in 4th grade, she wrote Shelton a letter to him to tell him how much she loves his music. She sent the letter off and went on her way hoping Shelton would read it.
“I was kind of hoping he would, but then again I thought he is so popular and he probably gets a lot of these,” Payne said. “So, he may not get a chance to read it or respond, but even if he read it I would be thankful.”
Tuesday, when Taylor came home from school, her mother asked her to sit on the couch. While filming the exchange, her mother asked her if she remembered the conversation they had about giving their address out over the Internet. Taylor was taken back by this. Soon after, her mother presented her a letter postmarked from Oklahoma. Taylor said she did not know anyone who lived in Oklahoma, but she was in for a surprise.
The letter she wrote in 2015, was sent back to her, with Blake Shelton’s autograph telling her good job on the drawing.
Taylor’s mother says she got emotional when she saw her daughter’s excitement. She said it will be a moment that will never be forgotten.
One of Taylor’s favorite Blake Shelton’s songs is “God Gave Me You.” There is a line that goes “God gave me you for the ups and downs.”
Taylor said there was a down time in her life where Blake Shelton was there for her.
In 2013, her grandfather passed away. Taylor and her grandfather were really close, and Taylor says after he passed, she listened to more Blake Shelton songs than she ever did before. Shelton’s music helped her get through those times, and she is ever thankful for that.
Payne said that hearing back from Shelton meant a lot, but it would mean the world to have the chance to meet him.
“I don’t know how I would get to meet him, but I think it would be awesome because I look up to him so much,” Payne said. “He is such a good artist and has such a good voice and he’s just able to put a smile on my face I watch his music videos or listen to his music.”
