Inmate dies at Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Jail

An inmate has died at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Jail. 

According to a press release, jail staff found an unresponsive inmate Sunday at 5:45 a.m.

Sheriff Pete Smith says upon finding the inmate, jail staff contacted the in-house medical department. The medical department called an ambulance and the man was later pronounced dead. 

Sheriff Smith says the identity of the inmate has not been released yet. However, the GBI has been notified and will be in charge of the investigation.
