JUST IN: Russell County inmate passes away

RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala (WRBL) - A Russell County inmate has passed away.

64-year-old Shirlene Colberson Miles passed away at Jack Hughston Hospital Monday, July 2nd.

Officials say she died from congestive heart failure. Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor says she has been in and out of jail frequently.

Sheriff Taylor says based on the investigation it does not appear Miles died from anything related to the jail. He did mention that Miles fell and hit her head on June 31st shortly after being sentenced.

Sheriff Taylor says based on the court agreement she would've been allowed to get out early. He says they wanted to bring this to the media since she was technically still in custody.

Officials say she has an extensive history of high blood pressure. Sheriff Taylor says Colberson also had advanced cancer that was not being treated. He says he doesn't know if she knew that.

They believe Colberson was homeless.

Sheriff Taylor says the last inmate death was a suicide about four to five years ago.
